Civil Security

Autonomous platforms for public safety agencies, critical infrastructure and industrial surveillance — the PALLAS family from ALPS.Robotics.

Context

Modular automation for the Civil Security industry

Civil security today is more than guard duty at the factory gate. Public safety and emergency response agencies — fire services, police, emergency medical services, civil protection and technical relief organizations — increasingly work with unmanned ground platforms. In parallel, critical infrastructure, industrial sites, substations and expansive plant premises require continuous surveillance, 24/7 and weather-independent.

Autonomous platforms of the PALLAS family from ALPS.Robotics perform exactly these tasks: reconnaissance in hazard zones, firefighting support, search and rescue, perimeter patrol, sensor-based anomaly detection and mobile data acquisition. Available in several size classes from the compact PALLAS.75 to the heavier PALLAS.2400 — each matched to operating terrain, payload and range.

All PALLAS platforms are based on the same electrically driven, modular tracked chassis with an open software base — extensible for public safety users, integrators, security service providers and industrial operators alike.

Challenges

What makes this industry challenging to automate

Extreme operating environments

From plant fire brigades at -20 °C to wildfire reconnaissance at 50 °C, from muddy terrain to concrete stairs. Platforms must be mechanically robust and operable across a wide thermal range.

Availability in field operations

A failure during a public safety mission does not cost production hours — it endangers lives. Redundancy, self-diagnostics and rapid on-site repairability are basic requirements.

Data protection with video streams

Cameras in public spaces also capture uninvolved individuals. Data protection requirements (GDPR, state data protection laws, DGUV) must be consistently observed during configuration and operation.

Why NEXOS for Civil Security

Three reasons for modularity in this industry

PALLAS family in several sizes

From PALLAS.75 (compact, ~75 cm) to PALLAS.2400 (heavy payload) — matched to operating terrain and payload. Same software ecosystem, same spare parts base.

Open and extensible

Open firmware on Raspberry Pi + Maxon drives. Integrators, research and end customers can integrate their own payloads and software modules.

No dual-use conflict

PALLAS is positioned exclusively for civilian use — no weaponization, no military features. For customers with strict exclusion criteria, a clean separation from the ODIN defence line.

How we work

From inquiry to running system in four steps

1

Analysis

Free initial discussion (30–60 min). We clarify the parts spectrum, cycle times, environmental conditions and integration into your existing IT/OT.

2

Concept

Component selection, layout, schedule, cost framework. On request with virtual commissioning in NEXOS.XR before manufacturing starts.

3

Quotation

Fixed-price or milestone contract, with clearly documented scope of delivery, acceptance criteria and maintenance options.

4

Implementation

Prefabrication in the workshop, on-site assembly, programming, acceptance per documented FAT/SAT. Optional: remote service via NEXOS.DSP.

Standards & Certifications

Relevant standards for the Civil Security industry

These regulations are considered in our conception, implementation and documentation. Not every standard applies to every project — the specific selection is clarified in the project kick-off meeting.

DIN EN ISO 3691-4Driverless industrial trucks and their systems — safety requirements. Applicable by analogy to mobile platforms operating around people.
GDPR / BDSGFor video and person detection, the lawful basis, purpose limitation and retention periods must be clarified — project- and operator-dependent.
BSI KRITIS RegulationFor operators of critical infrastructure — substations, data centres, waterworks. Elevated requirements for IT security, redundancy and evidence.
RED 2014/53/EURadio Equipment Directive — radio approval for all wireless communication components (WLAN, mobile radio, LoRa, etc.).
CE markingConformity with the Machinery Directive, EMC Directive and Low Voltage Directive.
DGUV Rules (SGB VII)Prevention regulations of the German Statutory Accident Insurance — different rule sets depending on the operating environment.
Frequently asked

FAQ on automation in the Civil Security industry

Are PALLAS platforms approved for operation alongside people?
Yes, with a project-specific risk assessment. PALLAS platforms are equipped with 360° safety scanners and defined safety zones. For operation in personnel areas (non-fenced) an application-specific evaluation is prepared — analogous to the commissioning of an AGV under ISO 3691-4.
How data-protection-compliant is video transmission in public spaces?
Video and sensor data streams are processed locally and only recorded or transmitted during active operation and on a defined legal basis. Anonymization (blurring), short-term buffering instead of continuous storage and role concepts for access are provided — the specific configuration is clarified with your data protection officer.
How long does a platform run in continuous operation?
The core variants PALLAS.75 and PALLAS.2400 are designed for multi-hour field operation — specific runtimes depend on payload, terrain and sensor load. Hot-swappable battery concepts are standard — in public safety missions a second battery is carried directly in the transport bracket.
Can existing public safety command systems be connected?
Yes. PALLAS vehicles speak open protocols (MQTT, WebSocket, REST) and can be integrated into situational awareness systems such as Elviss or CoBRA. For specific public safety systems (emergency medical services, civil protection) the connection is implemented on a project basis.
